As the release date looms ever closer for Sidekick Issue #3...here's a little preview page...!

Robin is having some problems taking in the weirdness, trying to understand what is going on around him and then a hoard of zombies show up to make his life even more difficult than it already is. Always the way!

Six more pages to scan, level and re-letter (the pen I used for the lettering didn't come out well in the scan)...but it shouldn't take me too much longer. Here's to a decent time frame for release of this book!

Today is the Day of release for SIDEKICK #1 you will be able to purchase it in print this evening from Abstract Sprocket in Norwich for just £2.00!

I am currently investigating adding a proper BUY section to my website www.kelwinser.com and if all goes well you can get your very own signed copy! I may even throw in a free sketch!

SIDEKICK is a bi-monthly comic serial about a young man trying to find a place in a world that is changing every minute around him. Issue 1 is out September (now!) and issue 2 due for release in November (in time for the Thought Bubble comic convention). The comic story will be available to read only next month on this very blog.

So I'm prepping Sidekick #1 which will be in stores September now, a month later than anticipated, but I hope it's worth the wait...

I am working on Sidekick #2 to get ahead of myself, even though I am planning to release an issue bi-monthly as I have a day job and all that jazz...just trying to squeeze everything in that I want to get done so I thought a bi-monthly book would be slightly less pressure!

Been experimenting with the Issuu website I joined for free...it turns PDF versions of my books into digital flip books!! It's brilliant and I think I will be using it from now on to display my comics. I am so happy with the quality of the read and the layout it provides that it means my comics will be available FREE on the blog but will cost to get in print (only £2 or so, so still really well worth it to have a print version for old time sake!)...!

Check out the PRELUDE I did a few months ago...I originally posted it as separate pages, but this issuu has really made it cool with the page turning and full screen effect!

Story boards!

So some slightly different project news...I've been working with Bloody Cuts who, if you take a look at their site, are currently creating 13 short horror films (3-4 minutes plus in length) and I have been drafted to help them with visuals for their stories.

Mostly I have been brought on board for my story telling prowess in comics to create story boards for them, but also I have been and hopefully shall continue to create some creature/monster designs.

Not wanting to give too much away, I will be posting story board illustrations from some of the less-action orientated scenes to show you all my sequence ideas and the way I go about story boarding. There isn't really a right way or wrong way to do it. For my methods I use 3 page-wide comic-style panels to suggest widescreen. It's not actual widescreen ratios, but it's close and quick to create to help the director get an impression on camera angles and shot sequences.

Some Sidekick #2 News

Been sketching away...literally on the second issue of Sidekick...I want to make this a 6-part story and get at least halfway before releasing issue 1. My deadline will be towards the end of August, so even if I haven't finished three parts by then issue 1 will still be released. And in print form only!

Here's some digital sketches. I'm also now attempting to do the whole thing digitally. No 'real' pencils or inks anywhere!

Digital inking (and lettering)!

I've been toying around with Manga Studio which landed in my lap a few weeks ago now...

The virtual inking techniques it is capable of are far superior than anything on Photoshop or Illustrator (sorry Adobe, but they are...I still love you dearly!). Especially when using a Wacom tablet or similar (other tablet and pen sets are available!).

As well as digitally inking my comics with Manga Studio, I can also letter it as well. A little clunky at first as I am learning how to do it and there are more intuitive aspects to it than I originally thought, like trying to join 2 word balloons, just erase the line!! I still think Illustrator is a better prog for lettering - but to be able to do everything in 1 prog is going to be a massive time saver...even if I am having to learn something new.

I highly recommend Manga Studio for all forms of comics making and cartooning, not just Manga styles - but the Manga-specific tones incorporated are also very nice.

Of course, this still doesn't beat the good ol' pencils, pens, brushes and drawing board, but the digital creations are good for more 'mainstream-looking' comics.

By the way, all this stuff illustrated, comes from a comic I am working on for fun (maybe publication) written by Joel Morgan. It's called UNDEAD and it's about zombies. Surprise surprise right? Well, this does have a twist...who are the zombies? Is it subversive TV-watching types? Is it so-called 'wrong-doers' society has now turned their back on? Or is it the dead, risen to feast on the flesh of the living? All of the above? We'll see. More as it happens!

Been a couple of weeks or so since my last post and that's because I have been working on a secret project!! Above is a Children's Book which I have been working on with my pal Oliver Garwood.

Originally intended as a birthday gift for Oliver's wife, it now serves as an actual storybook for their Son, Noah, who was born 7 weeks ago! When he is old enough, Noah will be able to enjoy 'Florence Goes To School', a wordless picture book starring their pet rabbit!!

There is also a cover and some fun bio pages to accompany the story pages, but on display here is the dummy book which included endpapers at the start and finish. The whole book, inlcuding front covers will be available to view soon on my website: Kelwinser.com

So here is my FREE comic for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. It is a prelude to the issue #1 of SIDEKICK which will be released later this summer (JULY/AUGUST). As of now I am getting halfway through issue #2 and getting issue #3 well under way so that I can get ahead of myself for release dates...! This is truely a monumental task, creating a comic book on your own, but this is a story that started 8 or so years ago and I recently had a brain wave on getting it started.

The story here has my main character ROBIN GRAYSON (a play on both the superhero character of ROBIN and his alter ego DICK GRAYSON) getting some free comics for FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! It's a tongue-in-cheek poke at the comic shop world ) of which I have been a part of in the past as well as a glance into our main characters goals and ambitions which as we'll find out are what makes him so bitter as a person! To all intense and purposes it's semi-autobiographical in that I have taken aspects of my life, friends and quirks or whatever from people I have known or met over the years and jumbled them all into the people in this series.

As this was a FREE COMIC, you may print, staple/assemble this issue to your heart's desire! If you were in Norwich on Saturday 7th, especially at ABSTRACT SPROCKET comic shop, you may very well have picked up a copy among all your other FREE COMICS!

This Easter, I will be doing a holiday workshop in a high school! The theme will be 'inspiration' and I have created these comics-style comic book covers which we are going to enlarge and jigsaw together to poster up in the school somewhere!

Really looking forward to it and also I really like these images I came up with. Realistically, I would have got the kids to do comics covers with inspirational slogans all over it but I only have an hour with two groups! Not a lot of time...eh?!?

Anyway, will probably post an image of what the kids do on the day...look out for those.

Here's a little piece from the last comics workshop I did at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeology, UCL, Nov 2010.

While the students were working on their 1-page Egyptian-inspired stories, I was doing mine. I finally finished inking it and added some tones to enhance the look of the story. I like this black and white look, I'm sure I'm not the first to do it but it is a style I have been using for a while. I will probably do more now.

I'm using a special type of Japanese ink to create the tones, then turned it slightly sepia on the computer to help it looked aged.

A drawing of the main 'good guy' cast for the new comic I'm working on with Jose Cruz. The police officer is totally wrong! I drew it without looking at the original design...see below, which I prefer...but the girl/secretary is a lot more what I wanted to do...a girl-next-door, cute-but-a-little-ditsy kinda character, with an eye for our hunky main man Markham!

He's now writing a 6-8 page treatment to see how this story is going to work...if it does those pages will form the prologue flashback to the rest of the 22page(ish) issue#1!

NEW LITTLE PROJECT! Doing a campaign with my good pal Anthony Melton on trying to get the movie studios to hire Jon Hamm for Superman.

We feel extremely strongly about this that an older, experienced Superman would make sense to cinema audiences...the character and the movies have been around for a far few years and pretty firmly cemented in our world culture...! We don't need another remake, we need clear, intelligent ideas about story and character and not just about making wonderful special effects for the sake of it! Jon Hamm has both sides of the Superman/Clark Kent character nailed by seeing his most recent performances on TV and in Film.

So school has just started again after the summer break! What a fine time to find one of the best collaborations ever!! I am going to find the time like crazy to work on this new project as it is a really exciting premise!

I'm working with Jose Cruz, based based in Florida, USA, on his idea of a P.P.I (paranormal, private investigator!). I really want to get moving on this as we are going to aim this at Image Comics but initially self-publish this book! So, for now I will be posting news in the way of visuals, character designs and a few panels but not whole thing as we are going to try and sell us and the ideas to a publishers!

Doctor Who Comic

Part of the workshop I did for the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeology was to have a spokesperson to talk about writing for comics. That came in the form of Oli Smith, a writer of various Doctor Who spin off stories, namely an audio book (read by Matt Smith), a Doctor Who novel 'Nulcear Time' and a few comic scripts for Doctor Who Adventures magazine.

The comic above is my take on a script that Oli was commissioned to write to audition new artists for the re-vamp of Doctor Who Adventures when Matt Smith took over from David Tennant as the Doctor. This audition thing happened months ago so this is really just for fun!!

I recently hosted a comic book workshop at University College Londonin the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archeaology. It was a fantastic 6 days (two 3-day workshops with different age groups) and they really just got on with it...

...which allowed me the chance to prove myself as the teacher and do my own comic strip for the collection of everybody's work.

Tagboy is the latest addition and, even though the speech bubble still have to be done, if you have been reading along you will see that this has been the introduction of Tagboy to the JL universe. He has special BEARD powers that give him strength and other stuff - kinda like Hurcules crossed with a fisherman!

An update on the cartoon band illustration for Adam Moore. The keyboard player has been replaced with a male character so he is illustrated at the top and the final composition is underneath, a shot of all 4 in the group. The beige stuff surrounding the illustration is a rubber-based masking fluid as this is ready for painting (perhaps a technique blog coming up!)...although I am yet to get approval of this image...let that be a lesson to you kids of illustration; always get approval before you go ahead with any major work on an illustration!!

I think that's also a record for the amount of times the word 'illustration' has been mentioned in a blog.

This is probably my favourite drawing from yesterdays outing! I am playing around with word and image using stamps in my work and also drawing on unusual papers. I am doing the GCSE exam alongside my year 11 students which is fun and proving to be very valuable to them as well.

I like what has happened in this drawing as you can see Norwich Castle in the background being covered by the boards of a building site. The crane also looks ironically ominous in the composition, floating above the Castle. It makes me think that it's going to lift the traditional Castle out of an environment to make way for something possibly more modern looking in the way 'regeneration' tends to go!

So I have been out for a wander around town and did a bit of drawing and research for a commission.

I have been hired by an old high school chum to create a fictional cartoon band for his new music project (like the Gorillaz, only my style - love Jamie Hewitt though!). Check out his tunes at Evesound Myspace. On display above is about half an hour of watching the world go by and spotting various looks, fashions and faces that seemed to fit to the music as it played in my ear via my ipod! Next will be the job of refining the looks of some of these to make a band.

Also while I was walking through town, there was an accident (I don't know what actually happened) and couldn't resist drawing an ambulance that was at the side of the street for a fair amount of time...I hope everybody involved is okay!! I have scanned this and added some colour. I have drawn more today but will reserve that for another post!

Here's a pic I created for some peeps at school for their friend's birthday.

It was fun to work on considering that the photo they gave me was the back of the girls head!! Anyway, I did what I did from that and thinking that I actually knew the girl too! It turns out that I didn't. So what is actually here is a birthday card cartoon for a girl who isn't actually the girl in the picture!! Ahhh confusing and ridiculous, but the guys who had me do this said it looked like her so it's all good and she loved it so there...! enjoy!

I love the original black and white version, and when I coloured this (with a slight blue tint for the moon light) I wasn't so keen on it until I saw it with speech bubbles and the whole thing sort of feels right...?? Boy it has been a while!!

The comic I've been working on with a student at school is very near completion. Although I really like the blue shades in my previous entry, I've decided for the print version to stick to plain black and white and no shades at all. This will make it a lot clearer when sized down. I will produce full colour versions for the blog though as well as put the b&w one up as soon as it's done...lots of work there so will have to press on!

Hey there comics fans! So here's the first three pages from the comic I'm doing with a student from school. This project has been ongoing but that's what you get when you mix business with pleasure - running an art department at school and at home at the same time!
I'm trying a new technique here where I placed the inked pages on a light-box and painted the tones in blue watercolour on a separate piece of paper. Then joined the 2 separations in Photoshop. It's a style I was sort of influenced by in Darwyn Cooke's latest book, 'The Hunter' adapted from the novel of the same name by Donald Westlake aka Richard Stark. See an example of what I mean here.

BLIMEY I haven't blogged in ages! Lets see if I can get this right;

Below is a pic I did for my good friend Matt the Hatt for his birthday which was a good couple weeks ago so I must really be getting slow nowadays! Anyhoo, I apologize a lot and now here is my picture. It would have also been the image I may have submitted to Little White Lies magazine in a competition, which I was far too late to enter for. *sigh* oh well, maybe next time. And no other news on the comic I'm doing with the student at school other than it's all drawn and still inking. More will be up soon.

Some of my best work I feel and the whole comic is coming on really nicely. It's mounting up to 6 pages total and has a really good flow to it.

So...an update on the comic I'm working on. It's a ghost story staring 2 young students who meet their deceased and rather fed-up ex-Maths teacher at the top of Lover's Peak (also the title) one night.

Written by a student in my form, and drawn by yours truly, this story will be a nice spooky addition for the Halloween period this year (providing I finish it and get it uploaded in time!!!).

I know, I know, it's been a long while since some art was last posted - moved house and started new job. Can't be more specific than that really! But I'm back! Before I go on, the Parker illustration won me a sketchbook (published comic of sketch art, designs and concepts by Darwyn Cooke) which I received a couple of weeks ago now. It's signed and I'm well chuffed with it!!

Today I am posting some art from a new project I'm doing with a student from school my new school (been there 4 weeks!). It's separate from actual school stuff so it's quite exciting. Suffice to say the student in question is very popular yet has a few personal issues in and out of school which will prevent her from achieving her full potential if she is not careful. She is very creative indeed, has an excellent grasp of storytelling although her dyslexia does prevent her from being understood a lot of the time. I hope that by working with her to help express the stories she wants to tell will help maybe set her on a path which she may find favourable. I wish her a lot of luck with this and I want to show you the fruits of the work I have created so far. It's a short ghost story and the characters shown are (left to right) girl, James, Mr. Smith (alive) and Mr. Smith (the ghost).

More on this as soon as it happens. The next stage of breaking the story down into panels for a comic strip is what's happening next. Cheers!

This comic isn't one of the theories, it's my interpretation of the Illustration Friday theme 'memories', and the fact that not all memories are good memories and sometimes quite regretful. I've been hard at work this week on finishing my superhero epic mini-graphic novel Jeff Legend, the Most Excellent Superhero Ever! The last part will feature on Linoleum Press, where you can catch up and read the whole story, but the whole thing will be printed in black and white, limited edition of about 50 copies! More news as it emerges. Also, I have been doing a couple of jobs for my no.1 fan in the USA, who got in touch with me via my myspace (I Draw Comics). They are being revealed this weekend as the jobs are gifts for her work colleagues! In the mean time, here's a poster of Jeff Legend and Kelman!

It's been ages since I posted something so I finally got a few things to talk about but I'm gonna spread them out a bit.

First thing to say; FAT PUNK FOREVER!

Sam Brade creates lots of really funky art which can be used to decorate anything from t-shirts to skateboards to tattoos. There are also a bunch of services available from art direction and illustration to motion graphics, typography and web-based art.

So...the story so far! I have finished the 'Emerson' comic which Bryan DeWitt is writing. That's 4 months or so this has been going on and I can now put it to bed, just in time to enjoy the Christmas holidays too! A painting of John Constantine from DC Vertigo's 'Hellbazer' comic. Its watercolour and acrylic with ink detail for the line work.

I recently read a collection of Hellblazer called Haunted, written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by John Higgins. Constantine is one of my favourite characters and I just want to say for the record that casting Keanu Reeves in the movie was a really duff choice!!

Well, I said I'd update on Sunday and that's today! Here we go with a pic of Will Eisner's The Spirit I drew which I found the other day and decided to colour!

Enjoy - something else should be coming along later, I'm working on a comic with a chap called Bryan. Nothing else is known about him yet only that he writes a pretty good script godammit! It's funny and witty but a bit ambiguous, it's one of those stories told in many small parts so it probably won't make sense to me until I get to see the whole finished product!

RIGHT! It's been over a month now and still nothing! So here's a little something I did for school this week. I will be co-running an after-school club about comics and animation and children's book illustration and lots of other great stuff...! It's called StoryBORED? Above is the image sequence I created for the posters.

I've been working on my The Four comic like a mentalist (actually I haven't done anything for yonks) and just caught the creative bug again so it won't be long til that comic comes out! cheers for now!
